Glow In The Dark Roads

Designer Daan Roosegaarde and his team conceptualized using glow in the dark markings to save money on street light costs in 2013. This week, the vision is being rolled out for a test period on a 60 mile strip in south-east Amsterdam on the highway N329.

The concern is safety while envisioning a more self-sustaining and interactive world. However, until this becomes the standard, riding through the illuminated streets will be a fairytale experience. Roosegaarde who has an art background has no problem catering to that. He is already working on creating temperature sensitive markings that will appear on the road surface depending on the conditions.

Could this be the future?
